Doing Numbers Stress-Free

Thought for today:

To help recover from compulsive debting, we can meet in  Pressure Relief Meetings in which we review our spending and income, and develop a Spending Plan and an Action Plan.

Sometimes the disease of compulsive debting can make tracking our numbers seem so overwhelming that we avoid doing it:

  • Some of us have math anxiety and fear numbers.
  • Some feel it’s too depressing to add expenses and see their spending habits on paper.  The truth is too sad.
  • Others rebel at the idea of tracking expenses to the penny, thinking it beneath them.
  • Some think that someone else will or should take care of them like a parent.
  • Some are afraid of taking the time they would be spending on other things.

If you find yourself “avoiding numbers”, try to make it special.  Find a comfortable place to sit, play your favorite  music, add soft lighting.

Some people use incense or aromatherapy to make the experience more pleasant.  Some to deep breathing exercises before, during and after. Others make bookending phone calls to a program friend.

When you do your numbers, try to identify the feelings that come up as you add costs for food, shelter, clothing expenses, income, savings.  Above all else, be gentle with yourself.  You are on a journey of discovering truths about yourself.

Ask:

Am I setting a place and time where I can take care of myself and my numbers?

Meditation for today:

All creation starts with thought.  Thoughts can be reduced to mathematical formulas.   When people create, they are channeling the life force of numbers.

Affirmation for today:

“Today I will embrace the truth revealed in my numbers.  I will fit myself to that truth.”
