Finding a Sponsor in DA

Thought for today:

After a recent meeting a newcomer asked “I’ve made my six meetings in two weeks, and I’ve decided DA is for me.  Now what?”

A member shares:

At this point, an old-timer in the group spoke up, saying “It sounds like you’re ready to take certain steps in your recovery.  Remember how we’ve recited the Twelve DA Tools each week at our meeting?  Do you recall Tool #3 – Sponsorship?

“The phone numbers on our ‘We Care’ list that we pass around the meeting each week are there so that you can write them down and call a potential sponsor who can answer any questions you may have, one-to-one.”

DA Tool 3, Sponsorship:

We have found it essential to our recovery to have a sponsor and to be a sponsor. A sponsor is a recovering debtor who guides us through the Twelve Steps and shares his or her own experience, strength, and recovery.

The gift of sponsorship:

The program of recovery from compulsive debting begins where two or more people gather to stay solvent.  A sponsor can meet with us in person or on the phone to help us learn about the fellowship, the Twelve Steps, and the Twelve Tools of DA.  Many sponsors say that after a while, the person they sponsor also becomes a sponsor to them.

Ask:

Do I have a sponsor?  If not, have I  become willing to ask someone to be my temporary sponsor?

Meditation for today:

True friendship allows for honesty and vulnerability.  If we accept each others’ imperfections, we gain understanding and fellowship.

Affirmation for today:

“Today I will accept my own imperfections.”

“I am willing to sponsor and to be sponsored, because my solvency depends on it.”
