From Self-Centered In The Extreme to Serving DA (Tradition Nine)

Thought for today:

Debtors Anonymous doesn’t manage its members. They wouldn’t stand for it!  Our committee positions are simply responsible to members.

Members volunteer as Intergroup Representative or General Service Office Representative.  They attend special area meetings and reporting back to groups.  They turn over the job so another member can fulfill the job.

Working with its Board of Trustees (as outlined in the Twelve Concepts), DA’s service structure includes global outreach, new literature, and many other business functions of a non-profit organization.

Tradition 9

“D.A., as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.”

A member shares:

“Before DA I was extremely self-centered, absorbed in my compulsive debting disease.  I had no time for anything but figuring out my next scheme to pay down debt or get rich quick.

“When I found the fellowship, I learned that I wasn’t alone and that I wasn’t destined for misery and isolation forever.  There was a way out.”

“DA taught me to not only ‘think outside the box’, but to ‘act outside the box’, as well!  When I made meetings, tracked my numbers, had Pressure meetings, called creditors, and worked with others, I got stronger.

“Since joining the fellowship, I have done service on many levels.  On the group level, I have chaired meetings.  I have been the Intergroup Representative for my meeting.  I have been the General Service Representative as well.

“Each service position helps me understand that DA is more than just what goes on at meetings.  There is a support structure in place to keep it going.  I enjoy being a part of that.  It helps my recovery, and it helps DA.

” The disease of compulsive debting left me directionless, but DA service gave my life new meaning and purpose.”

Ask:

Have I discovered new meaning and purpose for my life?

Meditation for today:

The best way to live in harmony with ourselves is in service to others. If we are giving back, it is a sure sign of our Higher Power’s work in our lives.

Affirmation for today:

“I have a lot to offer.”

“As I work my program, I receive wealth and rewards.”

“I am grateful I can give back what was freely given to me.”
