How Important Is It?

Thought for today:

Our reactions to life matter.  With compulsions, over-reacting and under-reacting emotionally can hurt in unexpected ways.

As one member put it:

“Sometimes I panic.  Like when I get a late notice in the mail.  I start hyperventilating and thinking it’s the end of the world.  I get angry, too, and beat myself up.

“Other times things will happen that I shrug off but I should take them more seriously. Like when I don’t help my daughter with her schoolwork because of a good show on TV.

“My wife pointed out that I put more time into worrying about robbing Peter to pay Paul than I do about the kids.  That really stung, but it was true.

“The Steps are helping me to understand the pain I put myself and my family through because of my inappropriate thinking about life, time, and money.  I am slowly changing my attitude.”

Gaining Perspective:

The Twelve Steps and the Twelve Tools of DA gift us with valuable insights and the intuition  to see which things are truly important in life, and which aren’t.  Not what you wish was true, but how important these things truly are.  To be able to intuitively understand ramifications of our actions, and be willing to change our behaviors.

In time, we can gain this valuable perspective.  The guy who cuts us off?  Not so important. Doing our numbers?  Pretty important.  Making meetings by phone or in person?  Priceless!

Ask:

“How important is it?”

Meditation for today:

When tempted to overreact, think of the slogan “How important is it?”

Is the thing on your mind a serious setback?  It’s often not.  Why not turn the problem over to your Higher Power?

The weight of all the world’s problems does not have to rest on your shoulders alone.  Let HP take that burden from you.  Ask “How important is it?”  And be ready, because the answer may surprise you!

Affirmation for today:

“My reactions today will be proportionate to the situation.”

“I will listen and weigh my responses according to the principle of asking ‘How important is it?'”
