March 31, If You Work Your Field, You Will Get Results

Thought for today:

A member shares:

“After I had a Pressure Relief Meeting, I felt better. I was able to think clearer about money.

” I built up a cash reserve first.  After a while I started allocating money to debt repayment.   I repaid proportionally to each creditor based on the percent of total indebtedness I had with them.

“I owed $10,000 total.  $5,000 to Citibank, $3,000 to Bank of America, $1,000 to Discovercard, and $1,000 to my family.  So I gave Citi 50% of what I could afford in debt repayment,  BoA got 10%, Discover 10%, and my family, 10%.

“With my savings, I divided what I could afford to put aside each week into thirds: long term/retirement, medium-term/vacation or large expense item, and short term/contingency fund.”

“This started what is called the ‘snowball affect’.  Money balances started to grow almost effortlessly.

“But I prefer thinking of it  as a “garden affect”, instead, because my payments bore real fruit.  I imagined my money as seeds to be sown however I chose.  And this felt empowering.”

Think of a farmer irrigating a rice paddy. If he gets the water levels wrong or does not weed properly it quickly hurts the yield.  But with mindfulness, work and attention to detail a great harvest is achieved.*

With all the distractions around us, it takes mental toughness to mind our own business, too, whatever that is.  We can achieve our desired results in any goal we put our minds to.

Am I “working my field” today?

Meditation for today:

It is said that all the universe is the result of pure thought.  All the laws of physics can be thought of as coming from a reasoning, logical Higher Power.  Some call it evolution, some call it God.  Whatever you call it, you can tap into this spirit of abstract reason, and find the perfect form for your dream.

Don’t get bogged down by the work of it. Think of this as the natural progression of sowing and harvesting, that appears throughout the world.

Affirmation for today:

As I sow my time, money and love, I will receive returns greater than I ever imagined.

Prayer for today:

I pray for willingness to tend my simple field of influence, and do the work that has been given me. I pray I leave the results to my Higher Power, the “great Harvester”.  I pray that I am brought into greater harmony with others.

*”Extra Credit” Reading:

Parts of this particle were inspired by a book by Malcolm Gladwell:

Outliers: The Story of Success

Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of “outliers”–the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different?

His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.

Brilliant and entertaining, Outliers: The Story of Success is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.
