Signs That You May Be A Compulsive Debtor (Signpost #8)

Thought for today:

When we were debting, life seemed like a race we were always losing.  We made decisions about money emotionally, out of fear, lust, jealousy, or big-shotism.

  • At a restaurant, volunteering: “Let me get that bill – it’s on me!”.
  • At the store: “I’ve got to have that ______!”
  • When loaning a friend money: “Don’t worry about paying me – you can give it to me when you have it.”
  • Doing without health insurance to make ends meet.
  • Not having any savings or prudent reserve.
  • Not having enough money to buy food.

Signpost #8 (of compulsive debting)

“A tendency to live on the edge: Living paycheck to paycheck; taking risks with health and car insurance coverage; writing checks hoping money will appear to cover them.

Changing old habits:

In DA we found a way to put our needs first.   By taking the Twelve Steps and using the Twelve Tools, we learned to put food, shelter, transportation, and insurance before creditors, gifts, and binge spending.

As a byproduct of putting “First Things First”, we found that we didn’t need to panic anymore.  We were finally able to develop a spending plan and an action plan that made sense for us.

Ask:

Am I putting first things first when it comes to my spending plan?

Meditation for today:

We are all philosophers in a way. We all need to find spiritual perspective on our lives.

Seeking a Higher Power’s  point of view makes life simpler.  If you look after the simple basics of life, you will find contentment and room for prosperity.

Affirmations for today:

  • “I am grateful today.”
  • “I have great wealth today.”
  • “I am prosperous today.”
  • “I put my needs first.”
