Step Seven: Humility and Asking

Thought for today:

Material satisfaction is not the purpose of living, but many of us deceived ourselves into thinking that way.  Coming from deprivation, we confused the ends with the means, and thought that wealth and power were ends in themselves.

The truth is, wealth and power are only valuable inasmuch as we put them to good use.

A member shares:

“I didn’t want to give up my defects of character.  I liked some of them.  But I wanted solvency more than I wanted to indulge in them, so I humbled myself.  I asked my Higher Power to remove them, and my life has definitely lined up with my Higher Power’s vision for me.”

DA Step Seven:

Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

Character building:

We need to think of character building as a worthy thing to pursue. Whether we are in debt or not, we all need to develop ourselves.

In the old days, we relied on ourselves instead of seeking humility.  Humiliation, with creditors, with friends and family, eventually forced us to learn something about humility.  Once we found a glimpse of pear from it, we understood that humility is the way to get out of debt and live a decent life again.

It takes real strength to try to be humble.  However, when we ask for such strength, it is freely given, and in the end our arrogance no longer runs our lives.

Ask:

Do I seek humility?

Meditation for today:

Humility is something to be sought after, like a precious metal. When we mine the mountain of our egos to find humility, we will find peace, which is more precious than gold.

Affirmation for today:

“I have everything I need in order to become the person I want to be.”
