April 6, Strategies for Letting Go of Yesterday and Tomorrow, and Living One Day At A Time

Thought for today:
Starting fresh is hard if you’ve spent years being mindless with money.  Interest payments begin to feel like unbearable punishment.  Retirement seems like a cruel fantasy perpetrated by Madison Avenue and Wall Street.
But the past and the future do not exist.  The past is a memory.  History.  The future could contain anything.  It hasn’t happened yet.  Only today exists, and with it the results of the past, and hopes for the future.  This moment is it.  This is what we have to work with.
Members share about unresolved history:
” I was terrified because I hadn’t filed my taxes in years.  I didn’t know if I owed them or they owed me, and I  was afraid to find out.  After I got a tax advisor and filed, it turned out they owed me!”
“I never opened my mail because it was always some bills I could’t pay.  Then I missed a check in the mail when I really needed the money.  It would have saved me a lot of grief to learn to process the mail each day.”
All we really have is today.  If we live in the past, we are filled with regret and longing, and we are prone to making financial mistakes today. If we live in the future, we are filled with fear and negative projection, and make poor financial decisions.
When we look to this day, as the ancient Sanskrit proverb says, then we’re in the realm of  timeless grace:
“… Yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision, but today, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.”*
Have I surrendered yesterday and tomorrow, to live today to the fullest?
Meditation for today:
All possibilities in life can be distilled down to this very moment in time. The power to change your course is available to you right now.   In this moment, any heights you dream of can be set as your destination.  All you need do is commit your entire being to the new reality you have chosen.  God inspires you in the present.  Listen to God’s gentle nudge!
Affirmation for today:
I will look to this day for opportunities to change the course of my life.  My decisions carry power and weight in my life.  I choose wisely.
Prayer for today:
I pray for the power to adapt to my current reality, and to not blindly insist on my way always.  There is peace in accepting who I am today and where I am at, as a starting point.
