Overworked and Underpaid

Thought for today:

Compulsive debting affects judgment.  It makes it seem reasonable to take on a lot of extra work to pay creditors.  Exhausted all the time, the debtor usually broods or wastes time, and it always feels like they were playing “catch up”.

Sign #10 of compulsive debting (DA):

“Overworking or underearning: Working extra hours to earn money to pay creditors; using time inefficiently; taking jobs below your skill and education level.”

A new member shares:

“I live a double life.  I work in an office 40+ hours a week, and on the weekends I work two other jobs.

“I have three different careers, and I have to make sure they don’t ever overlap.  It gets exhausting because when people say ‘how was your weekend?’ at my day job, I can’t possibly tell them I’m exhausted from working three jobs!

“I feel trapped and desperate all the time.  But I owe so much money, how can I possibly stop ? “

The road to recovery:

At the root of overwork was anxiety about creditors.  They had made desperate attempts to escape debt, and, like any compulsion, exhaustion and denial kicked in.  Their performance in their day job suffered, and as a result, they were overlooked for promotions and raises.

In the program of recovery, this person eventually had their first Pressure Relief Meeting, where fellow members shared loving feedback about their need for self-care.  They learned ways to be more productive with their time, to seek alternatives to compulsive work, and more.

“Together we can do what we could not do alone.”

Ask:

Am I open to good feedback, and am I will to use it to change?

Meditation for today:

It is better to be present in this moment than to be distracted by past regrets or future worries. In this moment, choices can be made for the better.  When we are rested we are better able to make wise decisions.

Affirmations for today:

“I make healthy choices that I can live with.”

“I schedule my day to leave room for restful moments.”

“I leave enough travel time to get where I need to be.”

“I am open to loving feedback.”
