Thought for today:
One member won a lottery and was shortly in worse debt than ever. How could this have happened? They had forgotten (or had never learned) the lessons humility teaches. They stopped humbly tracking their money and working the Twelve Tools. They stopped growing along spiritual lines through the Twelve Steps.
Old timers in DA warn that when it comes to quick riches one should “Be careful what you pray for!” But they don’t say this in order to cut the number of prayers we make. Far from it! Prayer is fundamental to many members’ recovery. They merely are reminding us that with each vision that is voiced, a chain of events begins, forcing us to adapt or be swallowed up in waves of change!
We need to understand the power of Visions to transform our lives, and wield that power wisely, not greedily. Smart companies don’t want to grow so fast that they can no longer keep track of customer orders. They’d lose money and waste time and energy. For the same reasons we too need to learn that “quick fixes” are not the answer – but the right visions are!
The main effort needed to make dramatic changes to our earning patterns and lifestyles is in voicing our new Vision by writing it out on paper or in a montage and then sharing about it at a meeting with other debtors. This makes the vision concrete and visible, something that has feelings attached to it and that we can attach to our refrigerator door as an every day reminder.
Having voiced our Vision, our subconscious really takes over from there, and we grow emotionally as we experience incremental achievement of our Vision. For example, if we go from earning $8 an hour to $10 an hour as a result of our Vision, our spending and material priorities will likely shift. We may have new temptations or distractions to deal with. And so it goes. Our lives change with each success, and we must adjust – emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
Affirmation for Today:
My vision today is _______ (insert your vision here)
Prayer for Today:
Grant me that the perfect _____ (insert your vision here) for me comes to pass. Prepare me in advance for a miraculous transformation that will result from this voicing.

I really like the idea of being conscious that when we pray we are truly activating a change process, and to be aware of that… That as we pray and move forward, we are changing and that may be uncomfortable at times.
I have definitely been guilty of praying for BIG changes, and then expecting them to be smooth and easy! OUCH!…. Then when I pray for smooth and easy, that does also come…. It IS a process, ha ha…
I really like this blog, and I appreciate that you are doing this, and being very clear that it’s not DA, yet offering good, solid DA-related information. Thank you.
Nancy, Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I really believe visions are inspired by our Higher Power, and our attitude about our visions makes all the difference. This blog is the result of a vision. Six months ago I had asked my Higher Power to help bring about the perfect blog for me. Circumstances presented themselves, and now it virutally writes itself!
I found a simple technique helps make sure I include God in my visions. I qualify vision statements with “…the perfect answer for me“. Doing this helps me let go of specific outcomes – after all, there may be many ways for a vision to come about, and who am I to think I have a monopoly on awesomeness? Plus, saying “perfect… for me” helps me accept that I don’t always know what the best version is. For example, if I’m a landlord looking for a tenant, and there are infinite possible tenants out there, then maybe, just maybe, my Higher Power can find the perfect one for the apartment I am renting. Saying “perfect…for me” also reminds me to include God in my visions – that being in harmony will only make the vision the best for me.
I hope all your visions become blessings, Nancy. Thanks again for reaching out, and for your enthusiasm. Recovery in this program is the source of great abundance, isn’t it?
