Right-sizing Your Expectations

Thought for today:

They say that in business you must manage expectations.  “Under promise, over deliver” is the popular mantra.

Expectations set us up for disappointment.  Resentments are based on them – a fiction we expect!  It’s obvious, right?

  • We expect that the people we love will  be responsible, only to agonize when they wreck a car or bounce a huge check.
  • We expect to get somewhere on time and wind up stuck in traffic, fuming.
  • We expect to have a nice, civil time at  a family gathering, and instead are filled with jealousy when a relative flaunts their good fortune in the stock market.

Reality is so much better than the illusion of unrealistic expectations.  Sometimes, in right-sizing our expectations, we need to have a courageous conversation with someone.

The idea is to free ourselves of expectations for perfection.  Our program and our serenity improves.  And sometimes by lowering our expectations we are pleasantly surprised.

Am I free if the bondage of expectations?  Can I “Live and Let Live” today?

Meditation for today:

We are all connected.  As we seek to understand others we  understand ourselves.

Affirmations for today:

“I am willing to participate in my own massive success.”

“I will take my luck as it comes, and fit myself to it.”*
