How Bookending On Major Decisions Helps (BDA Tool 11)

Thought for today:

For business owners, decisions are often complicated.  New situations seem to bombard us, forcing us to think on our feet.  With so much activity in our days, we can feel compelled to make spot decisions on difficult situations.  That’s why BDA suggests that we bookend – share on the phone or in person before and after serious matters.  Taking time out for reflection makes for good decision-making.

BDA Tool # 11:
“We bookend before and after making commitments and difficult business decisions or actions.”

A member shares:

“I used to rush to judgement with major decisions.  I couldn’t deal with the uncertainty of not knowing my plan of action, and I usually paid a price for blindly forging ahead.

“One time, I bought a luncheonette.  I already had a seasonal business, and I thought I could handle it during the off-season.

“When I was a kid, my family had owned a pub, so I had powerful images of running an establishment.   I thought it would be a fun money-maker.

“I never considered the long hours that running two businesses would demand.  I didn’t know how to delegate my workload, either.

I eventually became exhausted and miserable.  I drank heavily just to get to sleep.  I’d wake up and repeat the miserable routine.

“Today I realize that a truly good deal is one where I can stop and consult with trusted friends – my sponsor, business partner, and my Pressure group – before and after acting.  Talking with my friends in BDA is a powerful part of my business decisions

“I don’t have to act immediately, and I do have the right to change my mind.  I am glad that I am not the lone wolf I once was.”

Ask:

Do I allow myself time to digest the details of a deal and ask questions?  How has book-ending saved me money, time, or my emotional well-being?

Meditation for today:

If time was infinite, what would we do differently?  Take more walks by the water?  Read more?  Spend more time with friends?

If the present moment is all we have, and it is eternally the present, why not  stop to appreciate it when the opportunity arises, to find the truth of it?

Affirmation for today:

“Whenever I feel pressured into action I will stop and remember that I can always say no, or not now, and that time often reveals what needs doing.”

“I am not alone when I need to make a difficult decision.  I have friends and colleagues who know me and share a similar spiritual journey to me.”
