Tradition Seven: Self Supporting

Thought for today:

Twelve Step groups are totally self-supporting.  No outside donations accepted.  What other organization does this?  (That’s a rhetorical question, of course, because there is none.)

This policy flies in the face of the recovering debtor’s subconscious hope that ‘someone will take care of us before we get into real trouble’.

A member shares:

“D.A. declines gifts from well-meaning outsiders.  By passing the collection basket our group can meet expenses, including rent.  It is a tangible sign that the fellowship is a ‘going concern’.”

Benefits of self-support:

This Tradition teaches us that there is a way to mix spirituality with money: by anonymously giving money in the basket that gets passed around the meeting to meet expenses.  When we give, we reaffirm our commitment to our group and to D.A.

Tradition Seven sets an example of how to communicate about money outside of the meeting place, too.    It also makes us realize that we are not dependent on anyone else for our recovery.

Tradition 7.

“Every D.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.”

Ask:

Am I a participating member of my group?

Meditation for today:

Your Higher Power is calling you to a higher purpose, using your struggles to do so.

If you struggle with money, give a small amount to a good cause.  If you struggle with self-esteem, do something helpful for someone else.  If you struggle with time management, a priority list will help you communicate your intentions with others.  Disappointed with the results of your life?  Create affirmations that project success to your .subcounscious.

Use these techniques to transform your actions into what your Higher Power is realizing in you.   Ambitions that are implanted in you, when aligned with your Higher Power, are worth aspiring to.

Affirmation for today:

“I have all the time, money and love I need  to fulfill my dreams.”
