Where Do You Stand With Debt?

Thought for today:

When we can admit we have defects of character and we are not perfect, it is the beginning of wisdom.  We no longer exist in the center of the universe, and the burden of playing God is simpler to discard.

We develop a sense of understanding about what motivated us to act selfishly.  The subtle influence of advertisements is plain to see.  We begin to ‘intuitively understand situations which used to baffle us’.

A member shares:

“I used to love the 0% credit card offers I would get in the mail.  Each one I got made me feel like it was Christmas and the Fourth of July rolled together.

“Soon the card offers stopped coming, but my debt kept growing all the same.  In DA, I realized that I had to cut up those cards and develop a payment plan.

“These were the amends I made to myself, to my family, and to my creditors:

  • to know where I stand with recovery from compulsive debting;
  • to always affirm that I do not debt any more;
  • to admit that my thinking was abnormal when it came to credit;
  • to devote myself to responsible living and solvency.

“Life could still be enjoyable, as long as I lived the Twelve Steps, remained vigilantly aware of loan advertisements and their effects on me, and continued to grow in clarity about my financial situation.”

DA Step Nine:

Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

DA Tool Nine:

Awareness.

We maintain awareness of the danger of compulsive debt by taking note of bank, loan company, and credit card advertising and their effects on us. We also remain aware of our personal finances in order to avoid vagueness, which can lead to compulsive debting or spending.

Ask:

Am I vigilant about my reactions to credit card ads, and clear about my money?  How has credit card or loan advertising affected me this week?

Meditation today:

Consider that the thing you perceive as bad or good may not be either.  It is your perception of a thing that gives it lasting power, and perception is prone to error.

Loosen the grip of your perceptions, and seek you Higher Power’s perspective, who encompasses all wisdom.  You will find peace if you reconcile your will with what you know your Higher Power’s will is.

Affirmation for today:

(Write these affirmations multiple times, and then write your emotional reaction to them.)

“I make money easily.”

“(your name), you make money easily.”

“(your name) makes money easily.”
