Thought for today:
DA is better off when its members avoid publicly announcing their membership to the media.
Members are better off, too, when they take part anonymously, instead of in the media spotlight.
DA Tradition 12:
Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.
A member shares:
“When I came to DA, I was grateful that I what I was sharing was held in confidence by the group members. At each meeting they read a statement reminding members to let what they hear at the meeting stay at the meeting.
“I later learned that anonymity worked to protect DA, too. It helped discourage anyone from publicly linking themselves to the DA fellowship. It’s a constant reminder to let our Higher Power stay in charge.”
Reasons why anonymity works
If one member went public with their membership in DA and then later became embroiled in a public financial conflict, it could hurt DA. If a celebrity told the media that they were DA members, it would probably raise awareness of the fellowship. But what would happen to DA if that same person decided not to go to meetings any more, or worse, if they went bankrupt after a spending binge. DA’s name could not be protected. And for us, DA is a life raft we need to keep afloat.
But when we work the fellowship in humility, with egos kept at bay, the rewards of a continuing fellowship are great. This doesn’t mean that members can’t educate the public about DA. It’s just that those members who do educate the public must also remain anonymous, emphasizing the message, and not the messenger.
Ask:
Am I willing to forgo personal recognition at the public level, for the good of DA?
Meditation for today:
Humility is something to be sought after, like a precious metal. When we mine the mountain of our ego to find humility, we will find peace, which is more precious than gold.
Affirmation for today:
“I have all the recognition I need in order to be the person I want to be.”
