Defects of Character

Thought for today:

Having taken Step 5, we have shared a lot about ourselves with another member of the DA fellowship.  We have also learned a lot of truth about ourselves.  What next?

Once again we turn to our Higher Power for help.  This time, we ask for relief from character defects standing in the way of our solvency and sanity.

A member shares:

“They say ignorance is bliss.  I could no longer say I was ignorant about who I was.  Having taken a personal moral inventory, I saw myself clearly, and I didn’t like what I saw.

“I took some time to think about my new awareness from Step Five.  I wanted to find a new way to live, and to let go of the old me.  I wanted to change.”

DA Step 6:

Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Growth:

Step Six is powerful in its simplicity.  In it, we look at our defects and become willing to turn away from them. Healing begins when we put down self-destructive behaviors.

Ask:

Am I entirely ready for my Higher Power to remove my defects of character?

Meditation for today:

Imagine a stairway in a forest, leading up.  We cannot see where it leads, but we know it is the way to higher ground.  We need help to climb these steps to avoid a flood, and people are helping each other climb.

It is ok to leave behind old ways that are no longer needed. Fellowship of like-minded souls can help.  When other can’t or won’t understand, the ones who know us will be steadfast.

Affirmation for today:

“I resolve to keep my self-respect today.  I will advocate for my needs today.  If I feel discouraged, I will discard that feeling and move on..”
