How to Stay in “Fit Spiritual Condition” and T.H.I.N.K.

Thought for today:

Relationships are not like a cracked phone screen that we can bring to a kiosk in the mall to get fixed.  It takes time to process the feelings we have about the people in our lives.

When life brings about extreme feelings and we want to retaliate, DA Step Ten helps.  We can check our motives with a “spot check inventory”, and process what is going on inside of ourselves.  Often, this will give us the wisdom to not make a critical mistake in our relationships.

When our gut instinct tells us that something is wrong, we need to listen to our gut, and process what is going on.

A member asks:

“It was a very stressful day and time was at a premium. I had to take care of my elderly parent all day and towards the end time after multiple doctor appointments, I was getting impatient. I started to feel that I was being micro-managed and judged and I reacted badly.

“I was feeling a lot of stress. I immediately recognized my error and made my amend.

“Later, I asked my sponsor how I could avoid this kind of situation in the future, when the pressures of the moment start to get the better of me.  What do I do when I near the point of being inappropriate?

“My sponsor suggested that in the future I consider my motives before I speak, using the acronym ‘T.H.IN.K.‘  This meant that I should consider whether my intended words were going to be ‘Thoughtful, Honest, Intelligent, Necessary, and Kind’.  If I could say yes to all of those things, then I could speak my mind.”

Spot check inventory:

“Fit spiritual condition” is a minute-to-minute exercise.  When we think things through from our Higher Powers vantage point, and not from Self, we find answers.  If we need them, amends are corrections we make in ourselves to help us to move forward again.

Ask:

Are my words “Thoughtful, Honest, Intelligent, Necessary, and Kind”?  What’s my motive?
What’s the other persons motive?

Mediation for today:

Meditation is like shelter from in a lightning and thunder-storm.  Affirmation grounds us so that trauma passes through us without harm.

Affirmation for today:

“Wisdom guides me.  When my gut tells me something is wrong, I listen to it.”
